‘Don’t just complain about it, stand up!’ Former police officer calls for courage

Ex-senior constable Craig Backman on why he quit the force at height of the pandemic and his call for others to stand on the ‘right side of history’

Former Victorian Police senior police constable Craig Backman spoke with Rebel News at the ‘Kill the Bill’ protest rally over the weekend.

“I am just an angry dad who wants to protect his kids, just like everyone else who’s out here,” said Craig Backman.

Backman famously addressed an earlier rally on the steps of Victorian Parliament in which he directly urged the police officers lined up behind him to ‘do the right thing’ and stand with the people of Victoria.

“One of the things that I find about what you’re [Rebel News] are doing and people like Rukshan are doing, is that you provide the proof of what’s going on down on the ground. When you do it, it’s called ‘out of context’ – when the police do it, it’s called ‘evidence admissible in court’ on their body cameras,” continued Backman. “It is a shame that they have not embraced you guys, because guys you are the news now.”

The mainstream media has been notorious throughout the pandemic for demonising Freedom protesters and misrepresenting their message. Various publications have run hit pieces on independent journalist Rukshan, criticising him for livestreaming protests or referring to him simply as ‘a wedding photographer’.

Similar behaviour was documented when CFMEU workers protested against mandatory vaccination outside CFMEU headquarters only for John Setka, the press, and Labor figures like ex-leader Bill Shorten to call to them far-right Nazis.

“The disparity between what goes on in the media – in the mainstream media – and what you guys show, shows how dishonest they are and how much of an enemy to the people they really are.”

Backman served as a senior constable throughout most of the pandemic. He said that some police officers ‘protested’ pandemic rules by not enforcing them, mistakenly believing that ‘sanity would prevail’ eventually.

“If I stay here, I am on the wrong side of history,” said Backman, on why he quit the police force during the pandemic. “I have been speaking out ever since. These guys [the police] could end this tomorrow. They all complain about it behind closed doors. In the tearoom, they all whisper about how rubbish it is and they don’t want to be a part of it, but they don’t have the courage to stand up and say that publicly because they’re worried about their pay-cheque.”

Backman joined the force later in life and urged police to remember that they are citizens of the state above all else, saying that too many in the police were ‘trapped like robots’ in the force.

In this special episode, we are joined by Witt-boooka, Sovereign Kabi Tribal Law/ Lore Man, of the Sovereign Native Tribes of the Kabi First Nation, and Diane Djaki Widjung, Keeper of Records for the Sovereign Kabi Tribal Council of Elders. After nine months of protest, local police, who had earlier stated that they had no intention of forcibly removing the tribe unless there was a court order stating that the land did not belong to the Kabi people, received an affidavit from the CEO of Transport and Main Roads claiming that he had peaceable possession of the land. As a result, on October 15 2021, the tribe, their supporters and advocates were forcibly removed and six arrests were made, four for trespassing and two for failing to comply with a move-on direction. All those arrested were aged between 55 and 71 years of age. Australian laws make it illegal to destroy ‘Aboriginal cultural heritage’ or ‘aboriginal relics’, however, as Diane points out in this interview, it is the government who gets to decide what is considered ‘sacred land’. It’s yet another case of the fox guarding the hen house. In this interview we discuss why these actions are unlawful and how the indigenous and non indigenous communities can work together to help protect each other from all government overreach. About 11,000 Boeing Co. employees have asked to be exempted from COVID-19 vaccines the planemaker has mandated, according to a person briefed on the matter, a sign of backlash among some rank-and-file workers to the Biden administration’s rules for government contractors.

Nearly 9% of the company’s U.S. workforce are balking at the policy, stirring up strife at a time when Boeing is working to turn around its finances, resolve quality lapses and starting to lay the groundwork for contract talks with its largest union. Reuters reported the extent of the pushback to the policy earlier.

White House Tells Businesses to Proceed With Vaccine Mandate Despite Court-Ordered Pause

The White House on Monday said businesses should move forward with President Joe Biden’s vaccine and testing requirements for private businesses, despite a federal appeals court ordering a temporary halt to the rules.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, considered one of the most conservative appellate courts in the country, halted the requirements Saturday pending review, writing that “the petitions give cause to believe there are grave statutory and constitutional issues with the Mandate.”

In its response Monday evening, the Biden administration asked the court to lift the pause, dismissing the states’ and companies’ claims of harm as “premature” given that the deadlines for vaccination and testing are not until January.
