CLIMATE, CONFLICT AND GLOBAL FOOD SYSTEMS

The year is 2020. Our global food system is under stress. All countries are experiencing mounting pressures. Under this scenario, a group of leaders from government, the private sector, international institutions and NGOs will engage in a simulation to determine how they will react as the food supply becomes increasingly destabilized. Go to http://www.foodchainreaction.org to learn more about the game.

Food Chain Reaction: A Global Food Security Game

In November 2015, sixty-five international public and private sectors leaders participated in Food Chain Reaction, a simulation and role-playing exercise to improve our understanding of how governments, institutions, and private sector interests might interact to address a crisis in the global food system.

Over the course of two days, the players reacted to a scenario set five years in the future in a world where population growth, rapid urbanization, extreme weather and political crises combine to threaten global food security. By collaborating, negotiating, and confronting tradeoffs, they offered new insights into our food future.

Findings from game will be announced in January 2016.

Food Chain Reaction was produced by World Wildlife Fund and the Center for American Progress, with game design from CNA. Funding and technical support for Food Chain Reaction was provided by Cargill with major support from Mars, Inc.

Panel Discussion: Can Climate Change Break the Global Food System

On February 11, 2016 a panel of experts discussed the findings of Food Chain Reaction: A Global Food Security Game at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Adding climate change to an already volatile mix of disruptions to global food security means more profound and urgent consequences for the global food system. Policies and actions affecting trade, climate and national security can exacerbate food system pressures and volatility worldwide. Panelists examined these issues and proposed policy recommendations to promote resilience and global food security.

The event featured an introduction by Michael Werz of the Center for American Progress (CAP), keynote speaker Senator Tom Daschle, Center for American Progress Chairman and Founder and CEO of The Daschle Group, moderator Alan Bjerga of Bloomberg News and panelists Tim Bodin of Cargill, David McLaughlin of World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Matthias Berninger of Mars Incorporated, Geraldo Martha of EMBRAPA Labex-USA and Nutan Kaushik of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

American Hospital Associations – ‘Behavioral vaccine’ for teen depression

Source: https://www.aha.org/news/headline/2017-09-20-behavioral-vaccine-teen-depression

A team at the University of Illinois Medical Center hopes so, and has spent more than a decade developing and testing the best way to teach coping strategies to at-risk youth.

Benjamin Van Voorhees, M.D., the hospital’s chief of general pediatrics, heads the project, which is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. Van Voorhees is teaching children coping skills through a combination of online learning and traditional counseling. He hopes a technology-based “behavioral vaccine” can reduce the risk of mental illness for a diverse group of young people, from teens struggling with issues of sexuality to those living in neighborhoods mired in violence.

“Just as a vaccine works in fighting infections, this approach may stop a major depressive disorder before it starts,” he says. “We want to convey to primary care practitioners that these individuals are coming through your office every day, and we are not doing enough for them, and in some ways we are ignoring the enormous future potential adverse trajectory toward mental disorder.”

Van Voorhees developed an online, self-guided depression prevention program called Competent Adulthood Transition with Cognitive Behavioral Humanistic and Interpersonal Training or CATCH-IT. It is aimed at teens showing early signs of depression or pre-depressive symptoms as determined through screenings during well checks or other medical visits.

The program includes a self-contained learning component on the Internet that focuses on changing behavior and improving cognitive thinking and social skills. The website, which has evolved over time, teaches resiliency skills in part by allowing parents to read stories about other teens to learn how they overcame adversity and became more successful in school, their relationships or on the job.

InfoWars – Report: American Airlines Cancels 1000s of Flights As Vaccine Mandate Fight Continues

Source: https://www.infowars.com/posts/report-american-airlines-cancels-1000s-of-flights-as-vaccine-mandate-fight-continues/

American Airlines has cancelled over 1,500 flights during the Halloween weekend, citing “high winds” and staffing shortages.

The airline cancelled 634 flights on Sunday — on top of 543 on Saturday and almost 740 on Friday, laying the blame on windy weather.

“With additional weather throughout the system, our staffing begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences,” the airline told CNN, referring to about 2,000 flight attendants set to return from leave on Monday.

NaturalNews – Tens of billions of dollars worth of cargo lay anchored outside American ports as Biden-induced supply chain collapse worsens

Source: https://www.naturalnews.com/2021-11-02-billions-dollars-cargo-anchored-outside-american-ports-biden-induced-supply-chain-collapse-worsens.html

“There was fleeting hope that Southern California port congestion had turned the corner. The number of container ships waiting offshore dipped to the low 60s and high 50s from a record high of 73 on Sept. 19, trans-Pacific spot rates plateaued, the Biden administration unveiled aspirations for 24/7 port ops, and electricity shortages curbed Chinese factory output,” the Freighways website reported.

But in fact, the site notes further, the port congestion crisis that has been plaguing Southern California isn’t really improving at all.

The site notes that wait times for ships offshore are growing because there are too many vessels arriving daily and there are not enough resources to get cargo distributed in a timely manner. In fact, Freightways says that already, ports have far too much cargo for their terminals, trains, trucks and warehouses, as capacity has been stretched to the limit.

“The number of ships at anchor or in holding patterns is once again at record levels. According to the Marine Exchange of Southern California, 79 container ships were waiting off Los Angeles and Long Beach on Thursday, yet another all-time record,” the website reported, adding:

Marine Exchange data shows that ships waiting offshore on Thursday — including the 79 container ships as well as six additional cargo vessels carrying containers — had aggregate capacity of 597,250 twenty-foot equivalent units. To put that in perspective, that is 28% more than the Port of Los Angeles imported during the entire month of September and 70% of the combined Los Angles/Long Beach port complex’s September imports.

Assuming ships are at capacity, how much cargo value is out there in the “floating warehouse”? What’s in each box, and its value, varies dramatically — it can be worth a few thousand dollars or several hundred thousand dollars. But Port of Los Angeles stats provide a good guide.
