• The National Basketball Association is urging players who got a single-dose Janssen shot as recently as two months ago to get a Pfizer or Moderna booster, or face game-day testing starting December 1, 2021. Players who completed a two-dose regimen are being told to get a booster at the six-month mark
• The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is already talking about expanding its COVID-19 vaccine rule, so that small businesses with fewer than 100 employees may also be required to force the jab on their employees or face stiff fines. The public comment period closes December 6, 2021

France is entering a fifth Covid wave despite strict vaccine mandates.

“Several neighboring countries are already in a fifth wave of the COVID epidemic, what we are experiencing in France clearly looks like the beginning of a fifth wave,” Veran said on TF1 television, adding the circulation of the virus was accelerating, Reuters reported.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday said he will be tying the vaccine passports to Covid booster shots for people over 65 as cases rise across France.

“If you have been vaccinated more than six months ago, I encourage you to book an appointment now,” Macron said.

Pfizer and BioNTech on Tuesday asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to authorize a third dose of their COVID vaccine for all people 18 and older, even though advisory panels to the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in September overwhelmingly rejected a similar request.

The companies said their new request is based on the results of a study, conducted by Pfizer and BioNTech, which has not been published or peer-reviewed.

The companies said the study of more than 10,000 volunteers showed vaccine efficacy against symptomatic infection of 95% or greater for people receiving the booster.

According to the Associated Press, a median of 11 months after receiving their last Pfizer vaccine dose, trial participants were given either a third booster dose or a placebo shot. Researchers tracked any infections that occurred at least a week later.

So far, five cases of symptomatic COVID occurred among booster recipients compared to 109 cases in the placebo group.

Pfizer did not disclose how many participants experienced asymptomatic infection, or whether the clinical trial included individuals with natural immunity acquired from previous SARS-CoV-2 infection — as did Pfizer’s clinical trial for 5 to 11 years olds.

According to CDC data, about 25 million people in the U.S. have received a COVID booster. It’s not clear how many would qualify for a booster if the FDA signs off on Pfizer-BioNTech’s request.

(CNN)Double-masking, staying at home nearly 24/7 and rarely seeing people beyond his wife are still the way of life for kidney transplant recipient Andrew Linder, even after many in the United States are living like the pandemic has ended.Health officials are recommending third and even fourth shots to boost Covid-19 resistance for people with certain conditions, but that hasn’t eased the fears of some immunocompromised people.Linder, 34, received the life-changing gift of a kidney from his wife, Emily, in September 2019. He will be on immunosuppressants for the rest of his life to keep his body from rejecting the organ.In March 2020, as Covid-19 cases started to shut down workplaces and cities, Emily moved in with her parents for months because she works with the homeless and people in the prison system and did not want to get her husband sick.Andrew and Emily Linder got hitched a month before she gave him a kidney.The coronavirus vaccines brought some hope for the Linders, who live in Akron, Ohio. Andrew Linder had two doses of the Pfizer vaccine and later an additional dose and a booster. Hope quickly turned to heartbreak.”I had no antibodies whatsoever. That was shocking and scary and sucky for sure,” Linder told CNN. “I almost feel just as unsafe or if not potentially a little bit more unsafe now than at the beginning of the pandemic, just for the fact that I could get it at this point in time.”

The pandemic isn’t over for many

Linder is one of many moderately to severely immunocompromised people trying to protect themselves as a number of people across the US are going back to some version of their normal lives.The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 9 million people who live in the US, or about 3% of the population, are moderately to severely immunocompromised. That includes people in active treatment for cancers of the blood or for solid tumors, certain organ transplant and stem cell recipients, people with advanced or untreated HIV, and those who take high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress their immune system.

A new study published by the CDC last week suggests people with compromised immune systems may need to receive three doses of a coronavirus vaccine and a booster shot to get as much protection afforded by two doses to those who are not immunocompromised. The effectiveness of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines against Covid-19 hospitalization was 77% among immunocompromised adults versus 90% among immunocompetent adults.For transplant recipients like Linder and some other members of the immunocompromised community, the research showed that vaccine effectiveness was lower than that.

Dr. Lutchmedial received his third injection, aka “booster,” on October 24. He attempted a play on words to celebrate his third shot, calling it “Vax Shot 3: Electric Flu-Galoo.” It is an apparent reference to the 1984 film “Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo.” However, there is no third Breakin’ movie. Dr. Lutchmedial said he expected to feel sick after the shot because “my immune system is ramped up!”

His last Facebook post was published on November 7 at 3:10 p.m. local time. It was about visiting friends and family (his kids) at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Dr. Lutchmedial “died in his sleep” on November 8, according to CBC News.

He worked at the New Brunswick Heart Centre for more than 20 years. Dr. Lutchmedia was part of a team to perform the first MitraClip procedure in Eastern Canada. It repairs the heart’s mitral valve without open-heart surgery.
