During Wednesday’s Bloomberg New Economy Forum, billionaire Bill Gates discussed how the world can get past the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for the next hypothetical outbreak he keeps warning about.

Beginning his interview with Bloomberg’s John Micklethwait, Gates touched on the global vaccine rollout, complaining that in some “sub-Saharan African countries where the epidemic has not been as visible, demand for the vaccine is challenging to generate,” adding, “but we’ll do the best we can on that.”

Of course, the Gates Foundation head never mentioned how or why African nations with low Covid numbers would need to be vaccinated against the virus.

Regarding the next year of Covid, Gates said, “The death rate and the severe disease rates ought to be coming down dramatically, and by next summer getting to be quite a bit lower than the average seasonal flu level is assuming there’s no surprise variants, which right now is unlikely but can never be ruled out.”

Micklethwait oddly said Covid “is like the flu” during the next question, which is strange considering the grief many people received for making similar comparisons last year.

Next, Gates praised China for stopping Covid early, calling it a “huge blessing” before admitting the low amount of natural immunity in their population will force the communist nation to “drive their vaccination coverage up dramatically before they drop the wall” of strict Covid lockdowns and regulations.

An analysis of 8 million mental health helpline calls from 19 countries early in the pandemic reveals a 35% jump in calls related to fear and loneliness rather than to problems with relationships, finances, domestic violence, and suicidal thoughts that dominated before COVID-19 emerged.

The study, published yesterday in Nature, suggests that concerns related directly to the pandemic replaced, rather than aggravated, common underlying anxieties, the researchers said.

The study team, led by researchers from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, said they used helpline call data because they provide a real-time picture of the state of public mental health, unaffected by the design and framing of a study.

The researchers evaluated data from 23 helplines in 14 European countries, the United States, China, Hong Kong, Israel, and Lebanon from 2019 to early 2021, taking into account differences in the timing of local COVID-19 waves and pandemic-related policy measures.

Fear, loneliness amid lockdowns

Of calls to the 21 helplines for which daily data were available, volume rose 13.5% above prepandemic levels. After peaking at week 6 at 35% above pre–COVID-19 levels, call volumes began to decline, reaching 6.2% above prepandemic levels in week 11.

When the investigators defined the beginning of the pandemic as the time when stay-at-home orders were first issued, call volumes rose to 11.2% above prepandemic levels by week 2, climbed to 27% by week 3 until week 8, and then declined. The authors attributed the differences in time profiles to variations in implementation of stay-at-home orders, which typically occurred 2 or 3 weeks after local outbreaks.

Call volumes could have been limited owing to helpline capacity; at first, some helplines were unable to answer all calls and then gradually increased capacity to meet demand, the researchers said. As a result, total call numbers in the study should be interpreted as a low estimate of the true increase in calls.

“However, unanswered calls are not pre-screened, and call answering is thus a random process unrelated to the motives of the caller,” the authors wrote. “Thus our data provide representative information on the reasons for calling even if some calls were left unanswered because of capacity constraints.”

On the latest episode of The Hill’s “Rising,” journalist and political commentator Kim Iversen questioned the fairness of professional sport’s COVID rules that ignore natural immunity and segregate the vaccinated — who can still get and spread COVID — from the unvaccinated.

On the latest episode of The Hill’s “Rising,” journalist and political commentator Kim Iversen broke down the National Football League’s (NFL) vaccine rules, Aaron Rodgers’ COVID controversy and the question of natural immunity in professional sports.

“Last week, Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers quarterback, tested positive for COVID which has caused a firestorm of commentary from those who support him and many who don’t,” Iversen reported.

“Rodgers is doing fine and recovering as well as anyone in his age group is expected, but the controversy is surrounding Rodgers and his previous elusiveness regarding his vaccination status,” she said.

The 37-year-old reigning MVP, who told media outlets he chose not to get vaccinated because he’s allergic to an ingredient in the mRNA vaccines, has been the target of talk show hosts, including Howard Stern, Jimmy Kimmel and Jon Stewart, since confirming he was taking ivermectin and other treatments to combat the virus.

Carbon credits – which effectively allow companies to buy rights to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide – have been the focus of climate change jet-setters for years, unlocking the ‘value’ of nature’s commons without forcing the emitters-in-chief to actually cease their environmentally-unfriendly activities.

The prince issued a plea for “countries to come together to create the environment that enables every sector of industry to take the action required,” without specifying what exactly that action might be – only that it must involve a “military-style campaign” if it hopes to achieve success.
