DW Documentary – Yemen: the world looks away | DW Documentary
Yemen has become a humanitarian catastrophe. The country has been devastated by a civil war and Yemen is facing the worst famine in decades. The proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, the bitter conflict between Sunnis and Shias, has devastated Yemen and laid the foundations for radicalization and terrorism. Our reporters have been there – a land usually closed off to foreign journalists. Ten thousand fatalities, 300,000 internal displacements and as many as two million refugees – the United Nations says the country is going through its worst humanitarian crisis since the Second World War. And yet, the outside world seems to hear little or nothing about this Middle Eastern conflict. The warring parties have all but sealed the country off. ‘Yemen: The World Looks Away’ offers unprecedented insights into the plight of a country where bombs, battles, famine and disease have ravaged the population. Our reporters traveled from Aden in the south of the country to Sanaa in the north, crossing the frontline that divides them at Tais. They were accompanied by Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, one of the few people who have actually traveled widely within the country. ‘Yemen: The World Looks Away’ portrays a country destroyed by civil war, caught up in the struggles between regional powers and all but ignored by the international community. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. DW Documentary – Visiting North Korea | DW Documentary

Few tourists manage to peek behind the iron curtain of North Korea’s dictatorship. But the journalist Luca Faccio managed to visit Kim Jong Un’s regime. Anyone venturing behind the world’s last Iron Curtain into North Korea will experience a very different country to the one we know only through the usual images of rocket launches and mass rallies. The country is ruled by the dictator Kim Jong Un, whom the people worship – or are made to worship – as a god-like father figure. Little is known about daily life in North Korea, because all images that reach the outside world have been censored by the government. Visitors rarely see evidence of oppression, enforced conformity and starvation in the rural population. Still, journalist Luca Faccio is able to offer some interesting insights into the isolated country – although, of course, government watchdogs are on his heels everywhere he goes. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events.
