Japan’s mafia is reportedly cashing in on the Fukushima disaster by running the clean-up efforts at the damaged nuclear plant. Workers complain of being understaffed and mistreated by contractors who think nothing of throwing them into areas of high radiation. RT’s Aleksey Yaroshevsky reports from Japan.
It is seen as an important first step towards making the plant stable.
In a process due to take over a year, more than 1,500 tubes must be lifted out of a storage pool.
A spokesman for Tepco said they started lifting up a first fuel assembly with a crane at 15.18 local time, (06.18 GMT), on Monday afternoon.
A key question is whether the fuel rods were damaged during the disaster and may leak during removal.
Unit 4 of the plant was offline at the time of the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
Its core did not melt down as the other three did, but hydrogen explosions have since weakened the structure.
The first stage will see 22 of the 4.5 metre long tubes removed over two days and placed in a common pool with a cooling system.
The casks must remain watertight during the operation and have no contact with air.
An American expert taken on by the operator, Lake Barrett, said he was confident Tepco would do a good job.
But several other engineers, both Japanese and foreign, have warned that any errors during the process could have grave consequences, such as sudden leaks of radioactive material.
Tepco’s boss, Naomi Hirose, said at the beginning of last week that “safety was the priority”.
Meanwhile reports in Japan say Tepco is looking to shed 1,000 jobs through voluntary redundancies.

In Japan, a group of government officials has decided to come clean and admit that residents of Fukushima may never return to their homes. They say that radiation levels there cannot be brought back to normal any time soon and are urging the leadership to abandon its promise to make the area fit for living in. But only a handful of those residents actually want to go back – more than two years after an earthquake and tsunami crippled the Daiichi nuclear power plant.
A Japanese company has invented carbon wetsuits and lead-based underwear that can protect against radiation amid the growing aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear crisis. It comes as Japan fights to stop the flow of radioactive water leaking into the sea.
Three of the Fukushima plant’s nuclear reactors were damaged by an earthquake-triggered tsunami on March 11, 2011, which led to a nuclear disaster. The plant has been accumulating radioactive water ever since.
Designed in an effort to protect Fukushima clean-up workers, Osaka-based swimwear company Yamamoto Corporation unveiled the anti-radiation garments on Thursday.
The company claims that the wetsuit made from stretchy rubberized kneaded carbon can stop 100 percent of beta radiation.
The swimwear – which weighs only three kilograms – is completely fused so the contaminated water cannot seep through. The suit therefore protects the person wearing it from aftermath illnesses such as cancer, according to its makers.
Yamamoto Corporation is also working on lead-based underwear which protects the lower part of the spine and abdomen from harmful gamma rays. The underwear’s weight is 3.4 kilograms.

“The clothes which protect from two kinds of radiation – beta and gamma rays –as described above are the first development of such kind in the world,” the company said in a statement.
Due to be released in November, the wetsuit will cost just over US$1,000, while the underwear will cost around $825.
Water has overflowed at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) is attempting to discern the quality of the water and possible radioactive substances which could have been spilled.
TEPCO announced on Monday that the water overflowed in 12 areas of the plant.
Heavy rains caused water to flow over the barriers of an artificial embankment which surrounds a dozen tanks of radioactive water at the plant. TEPCO reported that liquid containing a source of beta radiation was found beyond the levees.
The company said the incident was “due to heavy rain in the Tohoku region.” Company specialists are attempting to identify the amount of leaked water and the radiation levels present in the liquid.
Radioactivity levels in a well near a storage tank at the Fukushima nuclear power plant have risen immensely, the plant’s operator earlier reported, fueling ongoing concern about the impact of radiation on the surrounding environment.
Last Wednesday, heavy rains brought with Typhoon Wipha caused reservoirs for collecting rainwater to overflow. The natural disaster was described by weather forecasters as the strongest in a decade, leaving at least 17 people dead and 50 others missing in its wake.
Workers at the Fukushima plant had to pump rainwater out of protective containers surrounding approximately 1,000 tanks holding radioactive water. It is thought that the heavy rains lifted contaminated soil.
1. Fukushima Radiation Readings Continue to Hit New High
One of the most absurd lies put forth by TEPCO (Fukushima plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co.) and backed by the government is the notion that Fukushima is really nothing to worry about. In fact, the incident was classified as a ‘Level 1 anomaly’ before it was revealed that radiation levels were skyrocketing to new highs as recently as September 4th of 2013. And it was this same revelation last September that forced the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) to acknowledge this reality and change the classification of the Fukushima disaster to a Level 3 ‘Serious Incident’.
The radiation levels were high enough to kill an unprotected human within hours.
2. Plant Operators Caught Faking Radiation Readings
The very core of the Fukushima disaster timeline that has been regurgitated by the mainstream media and government agencies alike was almost exclusively based on information provided by plant operator TEPCO — a company that is now on record as having lied to the population of the world in a major way. And there were no signs they would ever tell the truth unless forced to. It wasn’t until an independent investigation revealed the actual levels of radiation released from the plant (around 2 1/2 times more than TEPCO would even admit) that TEPCO was forced to go on record and state that the radiation levels they released were indeed much lower than reality.
We can only imagine what else they are lying about.
3. Radioactive Caesium-137 was Mostly Drained into Pacific Ocean
The independent investigation into Fukushima radiation levels not only exposed the lies by TEPCO regarding the radiation explosion at the plant, but that around 78% of the caesium-137 released by the plant was funneling into the Pacific Ocean. The plant now states that the three reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant released about 900,000 terabecquerels of radioactive substances. About 20% fell on Japanese land, 2% somewhere on land outside the country, and a whopping 78% remainder is believed to have entered the Pacific Ocean.
Meanwhile, fisheries continue to operate and governments continue to pretend nothing has gone wrong. And at the same time, the mainstream media (the dying media that continues to lose trust ratings according to major Gallup polls) pushes the propaganda that Fukushima is nothing at all to worry about — just keep eating seafood from Japan and don’t mind the fact that radiation levels are still spiking. And definitely don’t mind the EPA raising ‘acceptable limits’ of radiation in your food supply.
The answer is clear: exposing this information and inciting a reality check throughout the planet is essential to actually forcing the establishment to respond to Fukushima. Unfortunately, it once again appears that we are required to fend for ourselves on a survival level until we can reach the point where the public has truly had enough.
Personally, after speaking with top doctors and creating what is now a top natural health website worldwide, I teamed up with the internationally recognized expert Dr. Edward Group to create what is now the only form of nascent iodine I use — the Infowars Life Survival Shield nascent iodine product. A form of iodine that doctors have been utilizing for years since we have seen the incremental and intentional removal of iodine from the food supply at large.
