Lil Bub, the internet’s cutest cat, is building a not-so-lil media empire

In just under two years, the “perma-kitten” known as Lil Bub has gone from a rescue cat with multiple birth defects to an online phenomenon: 200,000-plus Instagram followers, millions of YouTube views, her own documentary, a book deal, a web TV show, and (if all goes well) an animatronic version of herself. She is, if you’ll forgive the phrasing, her own paw industry — an enterprise that’s as small and mighty as she is.

Not bad for a feline who almost got put to sleep just nine months ago.

You see, Lil Bub has — amongst other ailments — osteopetrosis, a very rare condition that has made it very hard for her to walk because of the “stone bone” condition’s effect on her legs. And back in December, when her owner Mike Bridavsky came home and found her in a lot of pain, he was forced to confront the idea of humane euthanasia — all while being documented for a movie by the folks at Vice (later to be called Lil Bub & Friendz) and contemplating whether to sign a book deal with Penguin.
