400 Children Rescued/348 Adults Arrested After Police Take Down $4 Million Child Porn Empire
December 2, 2016
Some may find the following post to be disturbing. Reader discretion advised.
Nearly 400 children have been rescued and 348 adults arrested following an “extraordinary” international child pornography investigation in Canada, according to a report by NBC News.
The three-year undercover project, named Project Spade, began back in 2010 when Toronto police officers first made contact with a man who had been sharing “very graphic images” of child sexual abuse.
What they eventually found was a full blown child porn production and distribution company in Toronto that was distributing their content online. The site was run by 42-year old Brian Way and sold and distributed images of child exploitation to people across the world.
The head of Toronto’s Sex Crimes Unit said they enlisted the help of the United States Postal Inspection Service since many of the videos were being exported to the U.S. and began a joint investigation. After a seven-month long investigation, officers executed search warrants across the city of Toronto including at the business of Brian Way.
It was there that investigators catalogued hundreds of thousands of images and videos of “horrific sexual acts against very young children, some of the worst they have ever viewed,” said the lead investigator at a recent press conference.
Police seized over 45 terabytes of data from the $4-million business that distributed child porn to over 50 counties including Australia, Spain, Mexico, Sweden and Greece. As a result of the investigation thus far, 50 people were arrested in Ontario, 58 in other parts of Canada, 76 in the United States, and 164 internationally.
What was most alarming was that many of the arrests were of people who worked with or closely interacted with children. Among those arrested were 40 school teachers, nine doctors and nurses, six law enforcement personnel, nine pastors and priests and three foster parents.
In one particularly horrific example of those arrested, police found over 350,000 images and over 9,000 videos of child sexual abuse in the home of a retired Canadian school teacher. Some of the images were of children known to the man and he was also charged with sexually abusing a child relative.

Doctors Confirm First Human Death Officially Caused by GMOs
Madrid| Doctors of the Carlos III hospital confirmed this morning in a press conference, the first case of human death caused by the ingestion of genetically modified food. Juan Pedro Ramos died from anaphylaxis after eating some recently developed tomatoes containing fish genes, which provoked a violent and lethal allergic reaction.
This surprising announcement comes after the autopsy of the 31-year old Spanish man who died  at the Madrid hospital in the beginning of January. The young man’s health rapidly deteriorated after he suffered an unexplained allergic reaction, and all the drugs used to refrain the anaphylaxis were entirely inefficient. The team of experts claims to have been able to determine that the genetically modified tomatoes that the victim ingested at lunch were the cause of the allergic reaction that caused his death.
Mr. Ramos was working as a clerk in a Madrid warehouse on January 7, when he started feeling ill just after lunch. A number of symptoms started to manifest themselves, including a violent itchy rash, some serious swelling of the throat and a drastic drop in blood pressure. The man, who was known to have allergies, quickly injected himself some epinephrine, but his health condition continued to deteriorate.
The young man was rapidly carried to the hospital by co-workers, but the medical staff was unable to identify the cause of his allergic reaction in time and none of the usual treatments or drugs seemed to work. Mr. Ramos was confirmed dead just over an hour after arriving at the hospital.

How Nepali Women Are Forced To ‘Sell’ Their Skin To Make Rich Indians Beautiful
Posted by Soma Basu in Society, Staff Picks
March 6, 2017
Three years ago, when Sushila Thapa managed to flee from a brothel in Mumbai to her native village in Nepal, the big scar on her back did not matter. What mattered to her more was that she was home alive.
A year later, when she saw another woman with a similar scar, she realised that the skin from her back wasn’t scarred because of one of her clients’ fetish or any injury. She mustered up the courage to make inquiries without raising suspicion and found that the skin was “stolen” to “make rich men and women beautiful”.
The other woman had sold 20 inch square of skin tissue to an agent voluntarily for Rs 10,000 to fight poverty. The money was soon over because of the huge debt she had to clear. The same agent helped her get into sex work. “The agent told her that he supplies skin to another agent and it’s used in making some sort of stuff that helps in plastic surgery,” said Thapa.
Streets of Thamel in Kathmandu are dark after 11 pm but the dance bars situated here buzz with life. Agents offer a wide range of “services” in these bars to lure tourists inside.
Since Thapa had come back from a brothel, she was hounded out by the community in her native village in Sindhupalchowk, about 75 km away from Kathmandu.
The agent brought her to a massage parlour in the tourist area of Thamel in Kathmandu in exchange of first three months of “salary”. Thapa knew what she was getting into but had no choice. Her only grouse now is if she had not been disfigured, she could have earned more, and safely.
Thapa has to cater to men mainly from South Asian countries. If she insists on using a condom, the client would not even pay Rs 300-Rs 500 that they, despite her disfigurement, agree to shell out. Other women in the massage parlour earn as much as Rs 5,000 “per sitting”.
These parlours also have facilities for beauty massage, but it’s a no-go area for South Asian women. A few women who visit these parlours for body massage are trekkers from western countries. This is why I went to the parlour for a body massage, Thapa was sent to the cubicle because it gave her an opportunity to earn more than what she would have earned for sex work. I started talking to her during the massage, and after discussing several things, including latest Shahrukh Khan movie and various creams to remove acne marks, I started pitching the questions I had gone to the parlour for.
“I am not in demand,” was all she could say, adding that if she spoke further much worse could happen to her. On pestering her for more, she showed me her scar and told me what happened to her and how.
The conversation was cut short by an elderly woman who ran the establishment. Somebody had overheard the conversation and complained to her. The masseuse was changed promptly. Thankfully, Thapa had given me the tip-off that helped me dig deeper.

Zero Hedge – U.S. Journalist Investigating “Migrant Crime” In Sweden Has To Leave Under “Police Escort” For His Own Safety
After Trump called attention to the rising tide of migrant crime in Sweden last week, independent journalist Tim Pool decided to head to Stockholm for a first-hand look at the “crime-ridden migrant suburb” of Rinkeby.  Unfortunately, upon arrival Pool didn’t get to do much investigating before arousing the suspicion of a couple of masked men who proceeded to follow him through the streets eventually leading to his prompt police escort out of the city out of fear for his crew’s safety.

If You See THIS Label On the Fruit Do Not Buy It at Any Cost!
by ANYA V
Most of us don’t know that the stickers attached to the fruits and vegetables are there for more than just scanning the price.
The PLU code, or the price lookup number on the sticker can help you determine if  the product is genetically modified, organic or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides or herbicides.
1. A four-digit code beginning with a 3 or a 4 means the produce is probably conventionally grown. The last digits of the code represent the kind of the fruit or vegetable you are buying. For example, bananas are always labeled with the code of 4011.
2. If there are five numbers, and the first is “8″, then the product is genetically modified. The label on genetically modified banana (GE-genetically engineered of GMO) would contain the numbers 84011.
3. A five-digit number that starts with a 9 means the item is organic. Organic bananas are labeled with 94011.
EWG ( The Environmental Working Group) analyzed pesticide residue testing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration to come up with rankings for these popular fresh produce items.

ONE GERMAN WEEKEND: TWO CASES OF ‘SOUTHERN TYPES’ GANG-RAPING WOMEN
Posted on March 1, 2017 11:00
By David Frankenhuis
Two women in Germany last weekend became the victim of brutal sexual assaults in two separate incidents. In both cases, the attackers were described as ‘southern types’, operating in small bands.
Carnival rape, crying woman in Leverkusen
On Sunday night, a 31-year-old woman in the city of Leverkusen was victimised by a gang of three men in the district of Lützenkirchen. She was attacked by all three of the perpetrators and subsequently raped on a lawn by one of them. After the assault, the men fled in an unknown direction, Freie Zeiten reports.
Passers-by had, later on, found the crying woman sitting in the streets. She was dressed up as a hippie since she had been out celebrating Carnival.
According to the victim, the men were dressed in dark clothes, in between 20 and 30 years of age, and all had a ‘southern appearance’. This usually means they come from countries such as Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt.
The police are asking the public for help, and an arrest has yet to be made in this case.
Violent gang rape on Hamburg riverbank
In Hamburg, two men on Sunday evening sexually assaulted a 46-year-old woman after beating her. The violent gang rape took place near a bridge called the Lombardsbrücke, which is located on the riverbank of the Alster.
On  Monday morning, the injured victim went to a hospital where she was investigated and treated, Focus.de and other local media report. Afterwards, she spoke to police to file a complaint.
In this case, as well, the woman referred to the rapists as being of southern descent, meaning Northern Africans or, in German police lingo, the so-called ‘Nafri’s’. She could not describe the assailants more accurate.
During the interrogation, the victim mentioned an elderly couple passing by the location of the attack. They may be important witnesses, police have stated.

Leading Physician Confirms Unborn Children Feel Excruciating Pain During Abortions
National   Charlotte Lozier Institute   Feb 24, 2017
Sheila Page, D.O., is board certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy. She treats a wide spectrum of patients from the newborn to the elderly, including patients with irreversible and terminal illness. Dr. Page (pictured right) has a special interest in children with disabilities, particularly those whose burden of care is difficult and who have been given little hope for a better quality of life. Dr. Page is one of our nearly 40 associate scholars. In this interview, she discusses palliative care and the science of fetal pain.
In your practice of medicine, you have worked with patients of various ages who are experiencing pain and who in some cases have serious, irreversible medical conditions. How do you seek to improve quality of life for these patients, and does your approach to treating your young patients differ from those who are older?
Page: Over the past 23 years, I have seen a broad spectrum of patients, including those who have either acute pain or breakthrough pain in chronic or terminal conditions. My goal is to help the patient to become pain-free or to improve their quality of life. Using osteopathic manipulative treatment, I try to increase mobility, decrease pain, and improve functions such as breathing, especially when the patient suffers from lung congestion or chest wall pain with breathing.
Using osteopathic manipulative medicine, I balance tensions in the fascial and tendinous elements of the body, relieving strains and congestion. The way I treat healthier adults is different than my approach to very frail patients, or children and infants. Sometimes, in order to resolve the problem, I have to directly touch painful areas, initially causing some pain. That discomfort usually resolves with successful treatment and the patient immediately feels relief. With children, I have to be very gentle and patient. They often are already in pain and at first are pretty upset about my treatment. Once they feel relief, however, they understand and are usually eager to be treated.

HORROR: Images Of Alleged “Organ Farm” In Malaysia-Thailand Border Shocks Social Media
By thecinnaboy Posted on November 30, 2016
Disturbing images of dead children, allegedly killed by “organ farmers” in the Malaysia-Thailand border went viral online, warning parents never to let their children off their sight lest their young fall victim to these syndicates too.
The images, shared by Facebook user Goh Soo Heng, said that over 700 dead bodies of children were found with their organs being emptied. The images showed children lined up like livestock with cut marks all over them, some being tied up or ‘packed’ into cardboard boxes. The gruesome images suggest these are the work of organ farming syndicates, looking to kidnap children in order to harvest their organs for sale in the black market.
The Coverage are unable to verify the claims nor the origins of these images.

German police: It’s an Arab rape game called Taharrush, and now it has come to Europe
Note: The following video apparently is not visible in Cologne, Berlin, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Malmö, and several other European cities where they seem to have completely missed it and thus are shocked to the core.

Lara Logan tells the American documentary program “60 Minutes” about the 20 minutes she was in hell and when she though she was going to die.
It happened suddenly. The Arab Taharrush rape game was in motion, and again she was in the spotlight, only this time the cameras were handheld cell phones and she was about to be gang raped.
Watch her tell about it herself.

It’s Finally Here: Radioactive Plume From Fukushima Makes Landfall on America’s West Coast
(EnviroNews Oregon) — Tillamook County, Oregon — Seaborne cesium 134, the so-called “fingerprint of Fukushima,” has been detected on US shores for the first time researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) said this month.
WHOI is a crowd-funded science seawater sampling project, that has been monitoring the radioactive plume making its way across the Pacific to America’s west coast, from the demolished Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in eastern Japan.
The seawater samples were taken from the shores of Tillamook Bay and Gold Beach, and were actually obtained in January and February of 2016 and tested later in the year.
In other strikingly similar news reported last month, researchers at the Fukushima InFORM project in Canada, led by University of Victoria chemical oceanographer Jay Cullen, said they sampled a sockeye salmon from Okanagan Lake in British Columbia that tested positive for cesium 134 as well.
Multiple other reports have circulated online, mostly in alternative media outlets, and mostly not corroborated by any tangible measurement data, that point to cases of possible radioactive contamination of Canadian salmon, but EnviroNews Oregon has not independently confirmed any of these claims.

‘Let God take you’: Woman said she left her blind, autistic son in field until he died, police say
When Officer Billy Simpson found Kimberly Lightwine on Aug. 29, she was lying facedown in the grass three feet from her Ford Expedition, which had come to rest in the middle of a Missouri field.
The temperature rose to 91 that day.
She was naked in the summer heat, save for a pair of panties.
Sprawled on the grass about 10 feet away from her was a 19-year-old wearing a diaper, which appeared to be full.
The boy was dead.
He was also her son.

Only through Jesus we can be saved

While going through today’s events it seems that the things are getting closer to the boiling point and the sentiment of urgency in preparation, both spiritual and material, has accentuated…at least for me and the other people who are talking about this.

But then I look around…all is calm…the sun is still shining…at least for now, we have food, gas and all the necessities for living. But for how long? Because people around me seem to not care that we are on the verge of world destruction and the possible Judgement.

Yesterday I started to think about why will Jesus and God, our Father, will have to come and stop all this for the elect sake? Probably because a large number of people will die, like is written in Georgia guide stones or because we mess up things genetically so bad, like in the days of Noah.

I heard a pastor talking that if at least one of the seven vials was broken then we can’t pray for this to be changed. Because the Judgement has already started and what we can do is repent and pray for forgiveness not only for us but for our family and for as many people as we can, even if we don’t know them.

Why do this?

Well if the whole Universe is a simulation then the Bible is true, if it is true then it means that Jesus, God, The Holly Spirit and all the information provided by the prophets is true and all this is just a test. Because if anybody wants to be in the presence of God, then one should have a pure soul.

How can we do this?

By ourselves nothing.

Why?

Because we have to accept this, that only through Jesus we can be saved:

26 And they that heard it said, Who then can be saved?
27 And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

What does it mean to accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour?

Easy…follow his teachings.

We have been given one last chance, and we better take it and not loose it. Remember: No more ALE8

CDC Police Will Eventually Arrest the Unvaccinated as “diseased criminals”
Americans traveling between states can be stopped, detained, and even quarantined, if they seem to have indications of an illness that could impact public health.
If this sounds vague, it is. The CDC has even coined a new absurd category: “precommunicable” illness. It means that with few or no symptoms—but merely the probability of having contacted someone who had or could have had an illness—a traveler in America can be picked up and held against his will.
The CDC asserts it has police powers to do this.

The CDC and its state allies are expanding the promotion of mandatory vaccines. The state of California now has such a law (SB277) for all public and private school children. There is a move to extend the mandate to adults.
So…suppose you are spotted and detained as a person who may have a precommunicable disease. One of the first questions you’ll be asked is: “Are you up to date on your vaccinations?”
If not, you’ll get them. Forcibly.
Now suppose the disease you’re suspected of having has a vaccine—which you never got. You’re bad. You’re delinquent. You’re essentially a criminal. “Sir, if you had been vaccinated against the disease, you wouldn’t have the disease now, and you wouldn’t be in a position to infect others with it.”
But why stop there? At some point up the road, the CDC will say:
“Those people who have not gotten the full schedule of vaccinations are AUTOMATICALLY PRECOMMUNICABLE.”
That’s how the two ops will intersect.
That’s where the CDC is heading. That’s where they intend to go:
A person who isn’t fully vaccinated is by definition a threat to “the community,” and he can be arrested.
It’s the perfect storm.

Russian MoD pondering re-launch of military bases in Cuba and Vietnam – Deputy Defense Minister
Moscow is considering plans to return to Cuba and Vietnam where it had military bases in the past, Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Nikolay Pankov said on Friday, according to RIA news agency.
“We are working on this,” Pankov said, while declining to elaborate. The Russian Defense Ministry is re-assessing the decisions made in the past to shut down the bases in those countries, according to the defense official.
Previously the deputy head of the foreign affairs committee of the Russian parliament, Aleksey Chepa said that Russia “should re-assess the issue of our presence in other regions of the world. I believe that it would correspond with Russian interests to restore the bases in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa that were closed,” as quoted by TASS.

Alex Jones breaks down how global elite are coming forward and saying that our reality is a simulation.

Here is the study from the University of Vienna: Is the universe a hologram?

The ‘holographic principle,’ the idea that a universe with gravity can be described by a quantum field theory in fewer dimensions, has been used for years as a mathematical tool in strange curved spaces. New results suggest that the holographic principle also holds in flat spaces. Our own universe could in fact be two dimensional and only appear three dimensional — just like a hologram.

New ‘Group Think’ for War with Syria/Russia
Exclusive: Official Washington has a new “group think” that is even more dangerous than the one that led to the Iraq War. This one calls for U.S. escalation of conflicts against Syria and nuclear-armed Russia, writes Robert Parry.
By Robert Parry
Not since the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq has Official Washington’s political/punditry class clamored more single-mindedly – and openly – for the U.S. government to commit a gross violation of international law, now urging a major military assault on the government of Syria while also escalating tensions with nuclear-armed Russia.

PUTIN ISSUES A ULTIMATUM TO THE UNITED STATES TO LEAVE EASTERN EUROPE
Originally appeared at Memoriabg, translated by Borislav exclusively for SouthFront

Путин постави ултиматум на САЩ да напуснат Източна Европа

Vladimir Putin asked the US to remove its defense infrastructure from Eastern Europe and from the territory of new NATO members in the Balkans and the Baltics (Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland) as well as its troops stationed there in recent years. He also insists that Washington’s sanction are lifted and compensation paid for the damage caused by them.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the termination of the plutonium processing agreement with the US, for hostile action by Washington against Russia and he set several conditions for its renewal – first, a “reduction of military infrastructure and the size of US contingent troops located in NATO countries who became members after September 1, 2000, to the level at which they were on the day of this agreement entering into force.”
“In relation with the radical change of circumstances, a threat to the strategic stability arises as a result of hostile actions of the United States of America toward the Russian Federation, and the inability of the US to ensure the implementation of commitments in the processing of excess plutonium for weapons purposes in accordance with international contracts” is stated in the official document, which terminated the agreement.
The agreement with the US was signed on August 29, 2000, and applies to the processing of excess plutonium for weapons purposes in Russia and the USA. Each party must take action to eliminate plutonium with a total weight of 34 tons.

Russia & China Combining Forces in Syria
The Russians are preparing to win World War III. They have presently evacuated 40 million Russians who have been transported to a bunker in an effort to practice to survive and an American nuclear strike.
Meanwhile, what has Obama done to protect the lives of American citizens? The answer is that he hate America/Americans and will not lift a finger to save even one American. This is why we have no bunkers.
Hillary Clinton has promised to enforce a no-fly zone in Syria. This means certain war. John Kerry has threatened to send terrorists to destroy Russian cities. Defense Secretary, Ashton Carter, has stated that our children will live in a world that is a burned out cinder. As if Russia needed more provocation to launch a first strike against America, there are four reasons why Putin will do exactly that and all four reasons relate to Syria.

Iran threatens West with ‘9 million fighters’
A prominent Iranian official is warning the West that his nation has 9 million troops who could be deployed to battle lines within 10 days.
The provocative statement comes from Mohsen Rafighdoost, a minister for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the 1980-1988 war with Iraq.
He now heads the Noor Foundation and recently delivered a speech to a political circle in Tehran.
His statement, made Sept. 25 in a speech to a Tehran political circle, were captured by the Middle East Media Research Institute.
Rafighdoost said: “The factor that led to our victory in the [Iran-Iraq] War is [the same] factor that led to our victory in the [Islamic] Revolution. The imam [Khomeini], in France, would order a parade [to be held in Iran], and the people would hold a parade, even in remote villages.”
“During the eight years of the imposed war, not only was not one inch of Iranian land surrendered to the enemy, but we also acquired deterrent capability. I believe that as long as the Islamic Revolution stands against the Western and Eastern camps, we will be under military sanctions. We must never think that the world will provide us with military aid. Thanks to the war and its martyrs, Iran currently has deterrent capability. After a while, the imam [Khomeini] replaced the call of ‘war, war to victory’ with ‘war, war until the fitna is removed.’ At the time, we understood this call as meaning that ‘we must be so strong that the enemy will not even think of a military strike against Iran,’” he said.

Paul Craig Roberts Rages “Washington Is Leading The World To War”
What must the world think watching the US presidential campaign? Over time US political campaigns have become more unreal and less related to voters’ concerns, but the current one is so unreal as to be absurd.
The offshoring of American jobs by global corporations and the deregulation of the US financial system have resulted in American economic failure. One might think that this would be an issue in a presidential campaign.
The neoconservative ideology of US world hegemony is driving the US and its vassals into conflict with Russia and China. The risks of nuclear war are higher than at any previous time in history. One might think that this also would be an issue in a presidential campaign.

USA’s Day Of Reckoning Looms – “We’ve Had 2 Warnings, The 3rd Strike Is Game Over”
History shows that once or twice in a generation a global crisis comes along that radically devastates people’s way of life. A fundamental shift so big and drastic and overwhelming that it destroys their standard of living and impacts every area of their lives. We are about to experience one of those events…

Colorado Has Assumed a Place of Special Importance to the New World Order
We have known for years that when Washington DC is destroyed, that Colorado will be the next capital. The CIA and the DHS have moved a good portion of their operation to underground facilities near Denver International Airport.
Predictive programming from the media has pointed to this fact. In the movie the Hunger Games, Colorado was the location for “Capital City” in the mythical country of Panem that looked eerily like Nixon’s breakup of the United States into 10 UN districts. In the recent TV series, Designated Survivor, the entire Federal government was destroyed, except for a few survivors.
In 2011, Denver played host to Operation Mountain Guardian which was essentially a FEMA/DHS incarceration drill using the football home of the Denver Broncos NFL stadium as the base of operations. Further, the during the drill, DIA was shut down, yet the elite flew their jets to DIA during the drill and presumably disappeared underground. In many people’s minds, this anointed Denver as the future headquarters of the US government.

Hungarian Intelligence Expert: Muslim Army in Europe Ready to Expand No-Go Zones – Fight for Sharia
Laszlo Foldi, a security and national intelligence expert and former director of Operation in Hungarian Intelligence, spoke with Hungarian TV recently about the Muslim threat in Europe.
Foldi says thousands of Muslim soldiers have already arrived in Europe.
“This is not terrorism in its classic meaning we are talking about here but an attack, an invasion that has two purposes. In the first place get as many as possible well-trained soldiers into Europe. And there primary task is to enlist the local Muslim population, those second or third generation Muslims who live in the “non existent” no-go zones. More than 50% do not want to integrate into the host culture. They are members of a potential future army. Another type of strategy exists… the conquest of Europe in another way… This is a perfect occasion as Europe invites in their future potential voters.

As wars wind down, small-town police inherit armored vehicles

Robert Shellmyer was relieved to see last week at his hometown’s 175th anniversary celebration that the local police department’s new prized possession was not driving alongside the tractors and floats in the parade.

By

That’s because a 45,000-pound, explosion-resistant vehicle from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan might spoil the mood.

Shellmyer, a 78-year-old city councilman for the small town of Washington, Iowa, was the sole local politician to vote against the department of 12 police officers getting the free MRAP — short for mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle — from the Defense Department three months ago. Washington is one of hundreds of towns and cities to get a recycled MRAP from the Pentagon over the past year and a half.

“Here’s the thing,” Shellmyer says. “Washington, Iowa, has 8,000 people. We have an MRAP now. We have a SWAT team. We have [police] dogs, and we have a SWAT team transportation vehicle that’s not armored.”

The city councilman began to think: “Goodness, this is overkill.”

How the secret police tracked my childhood

How the secret police tracked my childhood

Fighting the system used to be dangerous anywhere in Eastern Europe. For one protester from a small Romanian village it was disastrous – and also for his family, whose every word was recorded by the secret police. Carmen Bugan, who found the transcript of her childhood, tells their story.

Soon after my brother’s birth in February 1983 my father, Ion Bugan, was faced with the biggest decision he ever had to make.

Should he and my mother continue secretly typing anti-communist manifestos on an illegally-owned typewriter and distributing them around Romania? Or should he go to Bucharest to take on Ceausescu all by himself, without telling anyone a word about it?

Thirty years on we still live with the legacy of my father’s choice. And with the discovery of an intimate, horrifying story of our lives written by the secret police, the Securitate.

This was a Romania of food shortages, frequent power cuts, and ferocious reprisals for any form of dissent. The sounds of forbidden US radio stations – Voice of America and Radio Free Europe – woke us up and put us to bed every day, sending shivers up our spines as they merged with the noise from the kitchen. They gave my father hope that life could be better if only people stood up for themselves.

The Securitate was well acquainted with my parents. In early 1961 my father was in a bar with his best friend Petrica and a few others complaining about high tax rates and the collectivisation of farms. They came up with a plan to hijack an internal flight from Arad, in the west of Romania, and to fly it out of the country.

Petrica was a retired air force officer who in civilian life repaired radios like my dad. They had no idea that one of their friends was a Securitate informer.

All were captured before they had a chance to take control of the airplane and condemned to eight years of hard labour “for preparatory actions leading to fraudulent crossing of the border” (leaving the country without permission was illegal) and “plotting against public order”.

My father, in his 20s, found himself in terrible prisons at Jilava and Deva and at the Great Island of Braila labour camp, where he met some of the political dissidents who were systematically tortured there.

In July 1964, my father and his friends were liberated in a general amnesty but the Securitate followed his every move, looking for any reason to discredit him and throw him back in prison. Suffocated and intimidated, in February 1965 dad bought a compass, binoculars, antibiotics, a few vials of caffeine, some cans of sardines, and a roll of salami. He and Petrica made a heart-stopping escape from Romania in a blizzard. Dodging police and hiding in haystacks, they made it all the way to the Iron Curtain at the Bulgarian-Turkish border.

On 2 March 1965 at 07:30 in the morning, starved, weak and frozen, they rolled down a hill, jumped a 2m-high barbed-wire fence and nearly crossed into Turkey. The patrol squad showered them with bullets in no-man’s land, just 400m from freedom, and sent them back to Romania. My father was sentenced to 11 years at the harshest prison of all, Aiud, for “fraudulent crossing of the border, punishable with art. 267 of the penal code”.

Part of the sentence was a five-month period of torture by solitary confinement and starvation while wearing 45kg of chains day and night, in the “special” wing of the prison at Alba Iulia. The prison records say he was transferred to Alba Iulia “for judicial affairs” which is true in a sense: my father was tortured there in order to “admit” his supposed role as an “accomplice” in the theft of money that had “disappeared” from his radio repair shop after he ran away to Bulgaria. My father’s own account of this period is hair-raising: he was fed once every two days, and allowed to wash three times in the entire period he was held there.

But, as dad puts it, there was an angel looking after him – he was transferred back to Aiud and freed in January 1969 as a result of changes to the penal code.

Dad now attempted to live a normal life. He married and had children. Things didn’t seem so bad on the surface. We had summer holidays on the Black Sea and built a lovely house in our village, Draganesti, near Galati, in eastern Romania.

But behind the scenes the Securitate pushed him to breaking point, following and spying on him. My mother, Mioara, was denied a career in teaching because she married a “political agitator” and was therefore likely to “pollute the minds of the younger generation”. Told to choose between job and husband, she opted for the marriage, and they both began working in a grocer’s shop. Before long, mum was running the shop, and as dad had been banned from keeping the books at his TV/radio repair workshop, she did that too. Dad worked on repairs when he wasn’t stacking shelves. My parents put up with their lot, and worked hard.

By 1981, however, there were not many groceries to sell. Hungry factory workers yelled at them: “What am I going to put in my bag for lunch?” Evening bread queues often ended in fist fights. When the doors closed for the day, my father’s angry outbursts at the back of the shop mingled with blasts of Radio Free Europe. One day he told my mother: “I don’t want to spend my life just breathing air, and doing nothing.”

They bought two typewriters, one of which they did not register with the police, and began making anti-communist flyers protesting against shortages and human rights abuses. They spent the nights typing and driving all over the country to put them in people’s letterboxes, while my sister and I slept. The police kept coming to the house to check the prints of the legal typewriter, and to see whether they matched with the letters.

On 10 March 1983, about a month after my father and I visited the hospital with a bouquet of carnations to see my new-born brother, Catalin, my father took to the streets of Bucharest. On top of our red Dacia car, he mounted placards demanding human rights, and denouncing Ceausescu as a torturer who should be put on trial. Then he drove through the city centre, throwing leaflets from the window and blowing a whistle to attract attention.

He had said nothing to my mother. She was in the hospital with Catalin, who was close to dying from an untreated lung infection. My younger sister Loredana was away at gymnastics school and I was at home, aged 12, with my grandmother. This marked the beginning of hell for us.

Catalin Bugan Catalin was born a few weeks before Ion’s protest

Dad’s protest landed him back in Aiud, condemned to 10 years of hard labour for “propaganda against the socialist regime”, punishable under art. 166 line 2 of the penal code. My mother, my sister, my brother and I were placed under close surveillance.

We became accustomed to travelling across the country for a yearly prison visit, letters sent but not always received, food packages returned to us because “the prisoner did not behave appropriately”. Rotten fried chicken, softened apples and ulcer medication were sent back in the battered cardboard boxes in which we had placed them months before, hoping he’d receive them.

The Securitate had their own keys to our house and ordered us not to pull the curtains in the kitchen to make it easier for them to observe us. We later learned that my father had accumulated the codenames Andronic, Butnaru, Cazul Cocor, and Barbu, while Mum was codenamed Bela and Barbu. A school friend codenamed Cornelia was in charge of keeping a record of my feelings about dad for the Securitate.

Carmen Bugan is the author of memoir Burying the Typewriter: Childhood Under the Eye of the Secret Police

In 1985 mum and dad were forced to divorce. By 1987 I had become accustomed to children at school, and one of the teachers, referring to me and my sister as “the criminal’s daughters”.

On his birthday in 1988, Ceausescu proclaimed a general amnesty. My mother quipped that history would remember him for his compassion – having no idea that we would find her words transcribed 30 years later in government archives.

When my father walked home in the night on 5 February 1988, secret microphones in the house “registered an atmosphere of joy coming from the children”. My father “visited each room”, “asked for his shaver” and looked “for his radio”. He cradled Catalin in his arms, they noted. The transcripts of that first night say that “the family went to sleep at 03:45 in the morning. The Obj. [my father] complained of a pain in his heart.”

Bugan files The Securitate kept thousands of files on the Bugans

None of us remember all of these details, they are a gift from the record-keeping Securitate, but I recall the smell of prison on dad’s clothes.

A couple of months after dad’s return from prison, the secret police files note:

“At 01:32 in the morning, we could hear someone trying the door to the room equipped with listening devices. The door doesn’t open. We hear the footsteps of someone walking away and the insistent barking of the dog as to a person who is a stranger to the house.”

It is a transcript of the Securitate registering itself in the act of trying to come into the house to change the microphones. I read this file last August for the first time. It made me understand that when we heard noises in those years in Romania we weren’t really crazy as we thought.

End Quote Ion Bugan on death of Ceausescu

After receiving a series of invitations from mysterious men to meet them in town, death threats on the phone in the middle of the night, and even a call from a woman offering sex to dad, we decided to seek political asylum in the US. It was my turn to make a heart-stopping journey to the American Embassy with my father’s prison papers to give testimony on behalf of the family.

I managed to get into the Consulate but I was promptly arrested on the way out and interrogated for 45 minutes. I kept repeating what I was told to say: “We are under American protection, you can’t do anything to me.” They let me go and told me to never go back there again.

The Securitate records show how “concerned” they were about us and what might happen, as immigrants, to our sense of Romanian identity. They tried to dissuade my mother from going to the US – they told her that life in the West was a form of slavery to rich, lazy capitalists.

We waited 11 months for our passports, under house arrest. One record says that “after we have used every method to discourage the obj. [this time Mum] from leaving, we decided to expel her from the Communist Party”. It was, even according to the Securitate’s own file, a humiliation ceremony, where her friends were forced to hurl insults at her.

“Your girls will become prostitutes,” the passport clerk yelled at my parents. “Our hand is long,” they said, turning to my father, threatening us with death if we spoke about what had been done to us once in America. I now read my mother’s declaration in the files “not to damage the image of our socialist regime by actions or words”, and wonder how she must have felt to leave the country in her 40s with three children, a husband who had returned from the heart of evil, and no idea where we were going.

As we made our way to Michigan at the end of 1989, each carrying one suitcase in which we packed a lifetime, the Berlin Wall tumbled down behind us. The bloody Romanian Revolution followed at Christmas time.

We arrived as political refugees in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on 17 November 1989, travelling via Rome, and landing at night, in a snowstorm, not speaking a word of English.

The Bugan family The Bugan family arrived in the US with no English

In a refugee centre in Rome we had been taught that Americans, when they ask “How are you?” don’t really expect an answer; that they all have chequebooks; that they value democracy and free speech; and that all immigrants gain 8kg in the first year in the West because, well, there is just a lot of food to eat and most of it is rather different from our homemade soups. We couldn’t have been more thrilled with all of that.

We became eager to “assimilate” into Western life.

My sister and I would often ask the people in Grand Rapids we knew best: “Do I look American yet?”

At the same time we saw on a donated television how the Ceausescus were executed. My father said: “This is all wrong, now the world will never find out from him about his abuses.” My mother cried: “They are just two old people, they should not have been killed.” And all of us danced in the living room with joy that a revolution was happening in Romania.

Wreckage of Bucharest The uprising brought turmoil to the streets of Bucharest

I wondered if my father’s protest might have played some role in bringing it about. My father wanted to return. We said firmly: “We are staying here, and you are not abandoning us yet again.”

Twenty years have passed. We cleaned nursing homes, churches, worked at Burger King, made golf clubs, Mum worked in a children’s clothing factory, and we went to school. My father collected all of the discarded televisions we found, fixed them, and we had a TV in each room: “Such a waste,” he’d say.

We became American citizens. My sister and I married. She and her husband bought a house in the suburbs. We became “Romanians by birth”.

In 1999 Romania opened the archives of the secret police to people who had been subjected to surveillance during the communist years.

My father said: “I know who I am. I don’t need to know what the Securitate said about me.” But I disagreed and managed to find our records in 2010.

Now, it was one thing to experience the Securitate following and threatening us. But it is another thing to read the complete record of our daily lives, including the traps neatly laid out for us, to lure us into committing an offence, which we escaped simply by instinct or luck.

So, when my mother was in the hospital with my brother, the Securitate placed next to her a “patient” who also had a “sick child”. Nurses and doctors helped to stage it all. The woman who became Mum’s “friend” had a question scripted for her to help her spark the conversation. She produced reports on what mum said about my father and his dissidence.

Another example is a “legend” (a technical term used by the Securitate) by which an “Amnesty International employee” came to ask mum about my father and whether we were persecuted because of him. The officer was trained to have a German accent, and to look nervous. He invited her to a hotel in town to talk “out of the reach of the microphones”.

This was a trap to throw my mother in prison for speaking with foreigners about my father. Again, we now have the official record against which we can test our own memory of that day when the man came to the house. After he left, my mother said: “No-one is this worried about us, I don’t trust this stranger.” It was a lack of trust that saved her.

There are records of dreams we recounted to each other in the mornings. The transcriber knew us so well, he or she was able to read and duly note our moods. Some even took sides in family arguments, noting on the margins of the transcripts who they thought was right. It’s like having had a one-sided relationship with these invisible broadcasters of our tormented souls.

Ion and Mioara The family made a new life in the US

Needless to say, the documents have been sifted through, parts have been blotted out in black ink, pages are missing. What I have is what was given to me as publishable.

But we now have every letter that my father wrote to us from prison and we wrote to him. Half of the letters are direct transcripts—they were copied out by the censors – while half are paraphrases of what we wrote. There are not always quotation marks to indicate which of the words are ours, which are theirs. It is nearly impossible to detangle the self from the words of the Securitate. Some of the letters were not forwarded to us, so I read them for the first time last summer.

The question of what my father was thinking of when he drove away to Bucharest on 10 March 1983 has lost its painful intensity for us over the years. Yet in the files I see our daily recitation of blame and anger at the time.

That question would have remained unanswered if it hadn’t been for a trip to Romania that we took as a family in October 2013. My father was by then 78, my mother 67, so it was a good time to make the journey back.
