Thousands protest press credibility in march against mainstream media

Thousands of people in the UK and US united in their rejection of mainstream media in a mass protest. Protesters targeted the headquarters of media giants like Fox News, the BBC and NBS, decrying their narrow coverage of world affairs.

The March Against Mainstream Media (MAMM) organized the  international protest via social media and challenged the  established media to cover it.

In a statement posted on the MAMM website, the organization said  big media outlets had two options: “report on the fact that  thousands of people are currently protesting outside of their  buildings because they are keeping important news from the  public’s eyes,” or ignore them.

Putin’s Syria role deserving of Nobel Peace Prize

Putin’s Syria role deserving of Nobel Peace Prize

President Putin should get the Nobel Peace Prize for his moves to resolve the Syrian crisis, according to a group of Russian activists and political scientists who have indicated that they are officially proposing the president’s nomination.

One of the main sponsors of the move, State Duma MP Iosif Kobzon,  told reporters that in his view Putin deserved the prize much  more than the 2009 laureate, US President Barack Obama.

Barack Obama is the man who has initiated and approved the  United States’ aggressive actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, now he  is preparing for an invasion into Syria. He bears this title  nevertheless. Our president, who tries to stop the bloodshed and  who tries to help the conflict situation with political dialogue,  is in my view more worthy of this high title,” the Interfax  news agency quoted Kobzon as saying.

Syrian opposition totally dependent on foreign sponsors – senior Russian MP

Syrian opposition totally dependent on foreign sponsors – senior Russian MP

The Syrian opposition’s refusal to attend the peace conference in Geneva is a result of the desire of its foreign sponsors to thwart the peace process, claims the head of State Duma’s Foreign Relations Committee.

The Syrian Opposition lacks independence. It totally depends  on external support. All its steps are backed with interests and  calculations of its foreign sponsors,” Aleksey Pushkov  tweeted on Monday.

He also stated that several countries were hoping to thwart the  Geneva-2 summit, naming this as the main reason behind the  refusal of the Syrian National Council to participate in this  meeting.

There will be more such attempts,” Pushkov wrote.

According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US  Secretary of State John Kerry, the Geneva-2 summit, co-sponsored  by Russia and the USA, is currently preliminarily scheduled for  mid-November. The final date will be determined soon in  consultations with the UN Security Council and the League of Arab  States.

On Sunday the head of one Syrian National Council (SNC) George  Sabra told reporters that his group would not attend the Geneva-2  talks, adding that any talks were possible only after the removal  of President Bashar Assad and his government. Moreover, the SNC  leader promised to sever the alliances with any other opposition  groups if they decide to take part in Geneva-2 pace conference.

Hamas doesn’t take action for any side in Syrian conflict – spokesman

We believe that the Syrian people should decide on their future without any outside interference, Hamas’ representative in Lebanon Osama Hamdan says exclusively to RT’s Nadezhda Kevorkova.

Member of the Hamas politburo,  the organization’s representative in Lebanon, its spokesman and  negotiator Osama Hamdan says that Palestinian Sunnis are keeping  their alliances with Shia Hezbollah and Iran and, contrary to  what the media say, they don’t participate in jihadist operations  in Syria.

He is analyzing the consequences of the Syrian war and Russia’s  role in the US’s decision not to bomb Syria.

US media failed to cite pundits’ ties to defense industry in Syria strike debate

US media failed to cite pundits’ ties to defense industry in Syria strike debate

Nearly two dozen of the commentators who appeared on major media outlets to discuss a possible US military strike on Syria had relationships with contractors and other organizations with a vested interest in the conflict, according to a new report.

The Public Accountability Initiative, a non-profit research group  dedicated to “investigating power and corruption at the  heights of business and government,” determined that 22 of  the pundits who spoke to the  media during the public debate over whether the US should bomb  Syria appeared to have conflicts of interest. Seven think tanks  with murky affiliations were also involved in the debate.

Some analysts held board positions or held stock in companies  that produce weapons for the US military, while others conducted  work for private firms with the relationships not disclosed to  the public.

Perhaps the most notable example is that of Stephen Hadley, a  former national security advisor to President George Bush who  argued in favor of striking Syria in appearances on CNN, MSNBC,  Fox News and Bloomberg TV. He also wrote an editorial in The  Washington Post with the headline, “To stop Iran, Obama must  enforce red lines with Assad.”

Nowhere in those appearances was it disclosed, according to the  report, that Hadley is a director with Raytheon, a weapons  manufacturer that produces the Tomahawk cruise missiles the US  almost certainly would have used had it intervened in Syria.  Hadley earns an annual salary of $128,5000 from Raytheon and owns  11,477 shares of Raytheon stock. His holdings were worth $891,189  as of August 23.

We found lots of industry ties. Some of them are stronger  than others. Some really rise to the level of clear conflicts of  interest,” Kevin Connor, co-author of the report, told The  Washington Post. “These networks and these commentators should  err on the side of disclosure.”

The report found that, out of 37 appearances of the pundits  named, CNN attempted to disclose that individual’s ties a mere  seven times. In 23 appearances on Fox News there was not a single  attempt to disclose industry ties. And in 16 appearances on NBC  or its umbrella networks, attempts at disclosure were made five  times.
